WELCOME BACK, PULPATEERS! It's been several months since we launched the last new episode of Pulp-Pourri Theatre, and it's good to be back! For this episode we journey to the Red Planet for a weird sci-fi adventure that takes place both under the surface and in a completely different universe. It's called "The Eyes of Thar" and was penned by the prolific pulpster, Henry Kuttner.

Kuttner lived a short life, dying in 1958 at the age of 42, but in that time he published dozens of short stories for the pulps, 18 or more novels, and just as many stories for the Golden-Age Green Lantern comic book series. If you haven't heard of Kuttner, perhaps you've read a story published under one of 17 different pseudonyms; his contemporaries felt he'd been cheated out of his well-deserved fame, because his fans didn't know he'd written so many stories under so many names.

"The Eyes of Thar" was originally published under the Kuttner name in the Fall 1944 issue of Planet Stories. The adaptation was written by Pete Lutz in 2014 and recorded in 2016, with some pick-up lines recorded in 2017. Ms. Morizawa's introduction was recorded in 2017.

Stay tuned after the episode to hear a very special announcement for a worthy organization.

P.S. Thanks to all of you, November 2017 is the biggest month I can remember -- we exceeded 4,000 downloads! That's amazing, and I hope we'll continue to grow like this. Tell your friends, and make sure you don't miss an episode!

Since 2013, World Audio Drama Day -- October 30th -- has been calling our attention to the existence, and the creation, and the preservation of audio drama. Not only the old stuff your grandparents talked about: new programs as well, that are being created every day by modern-day producers. Some are brilliant; others are barely listenable. But all of them contribute to the genre, and all are worthy of some kind of recognition. That's why W.A.D.D. was created. It's no coincidence that it's tied in with the anniversary of Orson Welles's "War of the Worlds" broadcast -- and I hope, if you're here and reading this, that you already know the significance of Orson Welles in my life.

But enough about the Day. Here's our offering for W.A.D.D. 2017, a live recording of my adaptation of Robert Bloch's short story, "Return to the Sabbath", performed at Pulpfest '17 in Pittsburgh. We hope you enjoy it. Our show is significant in that it brought together three independent audio drama producers: Austin Beach, of Audioblivious Productions, who with his team creates the "Wynabego Warrior" comedy series; Ed Champion, whose seminal "Gray Area" series is making waves; and myself. All of us met in person for the first time in that location, and we hit it off like gangbusters, and performed pretty well together, too, I think. Also present were Cora Devoir, a Pittsburgh local, who volunteered to join us in the madness, and my sons Derek (who drove over from Norfolk, VA), and Keane, who flew with me. To have my boys involved was a very special treat for me indeed.

CAST:

ANNOUNCER/VITO/REPORTER: Derek Lutz

LESLIE KINCAID/SYLVIA CHANNING: Cora Devoir of Arcade Comedy Theater

EDWARD RELCH/KARL JORLA: Edward Champion of Gray Area Productions

STUDIO BOSS/BLESKIND: Austin Beach of Audioblivious Productions

SFX & MUSIC CUES: Keane Lutz

POST-PRODUCTION SOUND TWEAKING BY: Steve Blizin, Ryan Baldwin, Daniel Burnett (thanks, guys!)

ADDITIONAL POST-PRODUCTION FINE-TUNING BY: Pete Lutz

I'm honestly shocked that I hadn't posted this before now, our 2015 entry for the Sonic Society's Summerstock Playhouse: Our pretty decent remake of the Lux Radio Theater's 1951 adaptation of Carol Reed's 1949 film, "The Third Man".

In case you didn't know, the Summerstock Playhouse brings you, every Summer, a handful of old-time radio remakes from modern-day audio drama producers. As I indicated above, this was our first entry, and I'd already released our production from last year, "Good Ghost" from the Quiet, Please radio series. It's no coincidence that I went looking for our first production -- earlier this week I wrapped post-production on this year's entry, "Meridian 7-1212" from the 1939 Columbia Workshop series broadcast. This new one will be featured at the Sonic Summerstock in the last weekend of July.

Find the Summerstock Playhouse at http://sonicsociety.org/category/sonic-summer/ There's a special thing going on this summer to honor the memory of our dear friend Bill Hollweg: click on the link to find out more.

Just in time for Father's Day, here's the new mini-sode, which we call "A Word from Our Sponsors". Just a few loose commercials that would have run during "The Narada Audio Drive-In", were that still running as scheduled, but too good to let sit around, if you want my opinion.

Anyway, here are commercials from longtime sponsors Arrowhawk Trail Mix, Stoopnagle's Coffee, and The Turnbuckle Television Cartel, featuring the voices of (in order of appearance): ASHLEY CARROLL, BOB CARO, and (Special Guest Voice) JULIA MORIZAWA of "The Bright Sessions Podcast".

Following these spots is a special announcement, so please stay with us till the end.

Because I am unable to post more than one episode per month on my free account at Podcast Garden, I am posting this here and then on June 1st I'll post it there. But I couldn't let this wait any longer -- it's a wonderful interview with one of the most talented and sought-after voice actors I know, Tanja Milojevic. In this installment we chat about her many roles over the years, her personal accomplishments, our many mutual friends and acquaintances, and her goals for the future. We actually chatted for more than an hour, and the conversation came freely as if we were two old pals. But here are the best 53 minutes of that conversation. Enjoy!

May 21, 2017

Here are chapters 3 & 4 in the continuing saga of our Old West hero, Jake Dimes! Our chapters are entitled, "Ambush on the Trail", and "Arrested!"

I'm happy to say that we have received two fantastic reviews at iTunes, so if you get a chance to see them, please do. I agree with their sentiments wholeheartedly, of course. :-) And while you're there, why not leave a review yourself? It takes but a mere pittance of time and you'll feel so goo-ooood afterwards!

Thanks for being loyal fans, and if you're just joining us for the first time, please listen to chapters 1 & 2 before you listen to this one. Thank you!

May 14, 2017

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Narada Audio Drive-In is no more but both Pulp-Pourri Theatre and Jake Dimes are, so we're re-issuing the first five chapters so you can hear them as standalone eps before we launch the all-new sixth chapter!

Enjoy! "The King's Prerogative", our next Pulp-Pourri Theatre presentation, is still in production but will be released before the end of May. (I hope...)

Thanks for being loyal listeners! Show your love by leaving us a short review at iTunes. We haven't had a new one in several months and could use a little cheering up. ;-)

Please listen to Pete's special announcement about the future of the Narada Audio Drive-In, Pulp-Pourri Theatre, and Jake Dimes Range Detective.

May 7, 2017

Just a brief promo telling you, our beloved listeners, what you can expect from us in 2018! Let the spine-tingling begin!!

Apr 30, 2017

Originally released in November 2013, this is the absolute last original episode from the archives that we can post. And to be honest I didn't want to release this one because of the sound quality. But I've had it cleaned up a bit by Steve Blizin of the Drift and Ramble podcast (check his show out on iTunes, it's awesome), and I think it's ready to be heard (again).

Here's our cast:

Dana Gonsalves as Larry Halder, Micah Blain as Lieutenant Rodson, Wendy Sauer as Mildred, Pete Lutz as Tony Cintrella, Geri Elliff as Clara Lorn, and Andres Elizondo II as Nick Tanner.  Additional voices were supplied by Kevin Schuster, Larry Hutchison, and Jordan Bruster-Campo....Your announcer was Lisa Ayala.

”What Bleeds is What Leads” was originally published as the short story “Red Dawn” by Don James, and appeared in the September 1946 issue of “Dime Mystery Magazine”.  It was adapted by Pete Lutz, who also directed and produced this program.

Apr 23, 2017

One of the many special features that appear between-the-acts of episodes of Pulp-Pourri Theatre is the Philboyd Studge Interview: our intrepid reporter travels the globe, chatting with interesting, yet wholly fictitious, people who might have an unusual occupation; or an unusual name; or own a business with an unusual name. In search of the unusual, that's our Philboyd! Here they are, in order of appearance, beginning with his first one with a crack-filler on Mount Rushmore. The final interview is a never-before-released chat with a conspiracy theorist, conducted especially for this compilation. Enjoy!

All interviews written by Pete Lutz; Philboyd Studge plays himself.
