MERRY CHRISTMAS! Welcome, friends, to the Narada Radio Company's second year of performing -- LIVE, in front of an audience -- our adaptation of the 1947 broadcast of "The Lux Radio Theatre: 'It's a Wonderful Life'"! Once again, we performed at the historic Rialto Theater in Aransas Pass, Texas, over two weekends in December 2019, to small, yet appreciative audiences. (BUT -- this is not the same show as last year! It's an extended version: some lines from a 1947 "Camel Screen Players" radio broadcast, plus additional dialogue, were added to this production, for our audience's benefit.)

Please do your best to overlook the technical and sound anomalies present in this recording. They couldn't be helped, and couldn't be removed fully in post-production.

I want to thank all of you listeners, and my terrific Narada members, for helping us have a really wonderful year! We created seven new audio dramas in 2019 for "The Cellar", four for Sonic Summerstock, and two for World Audio Drama Day, and we brought live audio drama to three venues in South Texas. Not only all of this, but I put out nine episodes of our new podcast, "Old-Time Radio Essentials". What will 2020 bring? Tune in and find out!

Episode 9 -- "Christmas Show 1950", The Bing Crosby Chesterfield Show

Welcome to Old-Time Radio Essentials, a new podcast wherein a specific episode from a selected OTR series is presented, and then discussed by three co-hosts: Pete Lutz, Jane St. John and Paul Arbisi; to determine whether or not it meets the following criteria:

1. Is it truly representative of that series? (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.")

2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection?

So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our ninth installment (and Pete's selection), this episode of The Bing Crosby Show from 1950. We'll introduce the show, play it in its entirety, then discuss it at length. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy it!

To comment on how we might improve this podcast, or give suggestions for future discussions, please write to us at f6point3@gmail.com . Put the word "Essentials" in the subject line.

But with luck an' if the creek don't rise, our next feature will be a special Jake Dimes, Range Detective Christmas show, "Santa's Stolen Sack". Watch for that before Christmas Day!

Oct 27, 2019

In March 2019, the Narada Radio Company was invited to perform at the Rockport Little Theatre, Rockport, Texas. The choice of show was mine, and I had to hold auditions from local actors, rather than choose my own regular Narada players. As a result of this, two old theatre friends appeared at auditions, and my show was blessed, because I had my "Norma Desmond". We performed only three shows, and got only two recordings, from which I offer what you see here.

It's interesting to note that we created more than 90 live sound effects in this production, many of which I invented myself. Our audiences enjoyed watching our two SFX ladies creating the sounds.

The script came originally from the "Lux Radio Theatre" adaptation, but I added dialog from the screenplay here and there; and I wrote new commercials to replace the Lux spots, but for some reason the commercials didn't record very well, so I cut them out of the final recording. The show overall doesn't suffer from this loss, however, and in fact cuts down your total listening time. Please enjoy this presentation of BIG STAGE AUDIO THEATRE! (Originally released in July or August 2019 for Sonic Summerstock Playhouse.)

Very special thanks to our judges, Robert Tinsley, Garethandkath Severn, Nancy Gaugler, Paul Belcher II and Lisa Espinoza McGrew. Your time and efforts in this final bit of the competition are greatly appreciated!

Thanks also to all entrants and let's hope you send us something next year!

SCRIPT-WRITING CONTEST!

To celebrate the Narada Radio Company’s Six Hundredth*‡ Anniversary of making Audio Dramas, we announce a Very Special Contest: Write a Horror Script for our new series, “The Cellar”!

Here are the VERY SIMPLE RULES:

1. Script must be original, not an adaptation, although it may contain characters that are currently in the Public Domain. Script must not have been previously produced. Subject matter is your choice – it can be scary, morbid, thrilling, violent, tongue-in-cheek, sexy, or whatever you decide. Adult language is OK, but keep in mind that the human brain gets tired quickly of hearing an overabundance of F-bombs, so don’t overdo it.

2. Script must run at least 22-25 pages long (giving it an approximate half-hour run time). Format is your choice, so long as it can be easily read. It must also be written as an audio drama (i.e., no visual cues).

3. Script must include the following items or will be subject to immediate disqualification:
a. At least one monster or supernatural creature.
b. Sound effects and music cues
c. A MacGuffin (something that drives the plot: an item that is lost and is being sought; or anything of importance to the main character that others may or may not be hiding/keeping from him-her/also searching for) - can be anything but must be obvious.

4. Scripts must not have heavy third-person narration. If one of your characters provides some narration that’s fine, but don’t overdo it. Let dialogue, music and SFX tell the story.

5. There is NO entry fee. First Place and Second Place winners will receive printed certificates and a guaranteed slot in “The Cellar” series run. Third Place winner will receive a certificate and consideration toward future production. Decision of judges is final.

6. All entrants will retain possession of copyrights to their work, but First/Second/Third Place (if option is picked up) winners must agree to delay any new production until after it is showcased in “The Cellar”.

7. Contest is open to anybody, and deadline is 10-27-19, the Six Hundredth*‡ Anniversary of the initial release of “The Big Trip Up Yonder” – Season 1, Episode 1 of Pulp-Pourri Theatre. That’s just a short time away, so GET BUSY WRITING! BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!!

E-MAIL SCRIPTS TO f6point3@gmail.com. Scripts received after the deadline will be deleted.

*Sorry, that’s actually the Sixtieth Anniversary.
No, no, it’s the SIXTH, actually, sorry again!

Not only these, but you can expect an audio adaptation of a weird Grand Guignol play, AND Pete Lutz's own adaptation of a Lon Chaney-starred silent film. The possibilities are endless, the thrills are non-stop, and the stories are the best possible ones we could find and/or create.

With that in mind we proudly present a tale by Robert E. Howard, adapted by Pete Lutz. Set in the dry, dusty plains of West Texas, we bring you the story of an impulsive cowpuncher and a wise old Mexican, and what happens when an ancient evil is released from its burial ground.

Episode 3 -- "The Little People", Lights Out

Welcome to Old-Time Radio Essentials, a new podcast wherein a specific episode from a selected OTR series is presented, and then discussed by three co-hosts: Pete Lutz, Jane St. John and Paul Arbisi; to determine whether or not it meets the following criteria:

1. Is it truly representative of that series? (Can anyone point to it and say, "Yes, that is what [NAME OF SERIES] was all about.")

2. Is it an episode worthy of inclusion in any and every OTR aficionado's private collection?

So with this in mind, we three bring you, as our third installment (and Jane's choice), this episode of "Lights Out" (aka "Lights Out Everybody"), from a rebroadcast in 1943 or '44. We'll introduce the show, play it in its entirety, then discuss it at length. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy it!
